Philosophers still struggle with this question. “Why is there something instead of nothing? The something they refer to is the cosmos and of course (pun intended) the world we perceive. To them the cosmos is the only alternative to nothing.
Study of A Course in Miracles leads me to state that philosophers have it backwards. The cosmos they ponder as something is nothing, the alternative something, is Heaven, our true reality. Consider the following passage I’ve quoted in previous blogs. I include the whole paragraph here because sentences 5-8 discuss perception.
The statement “God created man in his own image and likeness” needs reinterpretation. “Image” can be understood as “thought,” and “likeness” as “of a like quality.” God did create spirit in His Own Thought and of a quality like to His Own. 4 There [is] nothing else. 5 Perception, on the other hand, is impossible without a belief in “more” and “less.” At every level it involves selectivity. Perception is a continual process of accepting and rejecting, organizing and reorganizing, shifting and changing. Evaluation is an essential part of perception, because judgments are necessary in order to select.
[T-3.V.7] [my emphasis]
Our true and only reality is spirit. God created it in His own Thought. The something part of the age-old philosophical question, the cosmos, is an illusion which we make by the perceptions of our split mind.
This world view, to say the least, is vastly different from conventional cosmology. For me this Course of Miracles world view explains why we seem to be here and what is really going on.
By reading the whole section, “Beyond Perception,” we will fine help with our daily lives. It has to do with exactly what the section title says. It helps us to go beyond being mired in perceptions and judging them moment by moment. Instead see our sisters and brothers as like us, spirit as one in God’s heart. Following are the final five sentences from the section.
God and His miracle are inseparable. 6 How beautiful indeed are the Thoughts of God who live in His light! 7 Your worth is beyond perception because it is beyond doubt. 8 Do not perceive yourself in different lights. 9 Know yourself in the One Light where the miracle that is you is perfectly clear.
The “one light” is God. The miracle is us as God’s one son created in His Own Thought.” There is nothing else.
Nevertheless; while stalled here is this illusory world we need to do as best we can to be kind and loving while smiling at our fellow travelers.
