I progressed from fourth grade through High School in the small WASP Village of Canisteo in the Southern Tier of upstate N.Y. In September of 1949 I entered Ithaca College, graduating there in 1953 with a B.S. in Music Education. After teaching Music in upstate NY for six years and one in California, I earned a Master of Music Literature majoring in Violoncello at the Eastman School of Music. During my next 26 years teaching music at Lansing Central School near Ithaca NY I did extensive graduate study at Cornell University, Ithaca College and SUC Cortland. I supplemented my teacher’s salary then working evenings and weekends as a Piano Technician.
My wife Marianne and I have been married since the day we both graduated from Ithaca College, May 30, 1953. We lived for 40 years at Greystone Farm near Ithaca NY where we brought up our six children. We now have 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. At Greystone Marianne founded and directed Personal Ponies, a non-profit organization that places small UK Shetland Ponies with children who are differently able. Recently she handed over her directorship to a long-time PPL volunteer.
I retired from teaching Music in 1986 and went to Urbana IL to study the Alexander Technique, (AT) and it was there that I discovered A Course in Miracles. I am still an avid “Course” student. After I qualified as an AT teacher in 1989 I taught the “Technique” in the Ithaca area, and also Chamber Music at Wells College. After I retired from Wells in 1997 we migrated from Ithaca to St Augustine FL, Pittsfield MA, Hot Springs Village AR, and recently to our “Hobbit House” cozy mobile home in San Luis Obispo CA.
At age 81 we both appreciate the cosmopolitan atmosphere here which is very much like Ithaca. I play Cello and/or Viola or Violin in the San Luis Chamber Orchestra. I work in a new studio/office, where beyond my laptop screen I can look out at an ancient Sycamore rooted into the bank of a creek which in the winter rushes down through Profumo Canyon from the mountains between here and the Pacific Ocean. We both enjoy the spectacular Pacific coast scenery and Central Coast Birding.
I am the author of four books, Aural Piano Tuning: The Knowledge and Skills Necessary Tune Pianos by Ear, (Greystone Press, 2000), Sister Elizabeth Kenny: Maverick Heroine of the Polio Treatment Controversy, (University of Central Queensland Press/OutBack Press, 2003); There is, “another way,” A Companion Guide to A Course in Miracles: Jesus’ Gift to Humanity to Recall our Eternal Existence in Heaven; and Giving and Receiving: From Jesus’ Teaching in A Course in Miracles (Greystone Press, 2011). Several of my articles have been published in the Piano Technician’s Guild Journal and Alexander Technique periodicals.
During the 1990s Marianne and I attended many workshops at the Foundation for A Course in Miracles; then near Roscoe NY. We moved to San Luis Obispo to be closer to FACIM’s new location in Temecula CA.
This Blog is about my day-to-day observations in this world from my perspective as a student of A Course in Miracles. I will call upon my life-long experiences, personal foibles and Course passages to show that in our day-to-day lives Course concepts, teaching and, principles can help us to cope with the difficulties of our everyday lives. Further, when Course basic metaphysics are kept in mind, current events and everyday life can be perceived as less threatening. We need to simply observe the world as Jesus teaches us: it is an illusion we make happen with the power of our split mind.
